Plugged In at Solid Sound 2011

Plugged In at Solid Sound

Plugged In students were invited by MASS MoCA to hold music workshops at the June 24-26, 2011 Solid Sound Festival for kids attending the festival.  Mass MoCA, located in North Adams, MA, is one of the largest centers for contemporary visual and performing arts in the country.  The Solid Sound Festival is a unique three-day event envisioned by the band, Wilco, and presented in association with MASS MoCA.  At the heart of Solid Sound is a sense of collaboration, where a band can join forces with a museum, a comedian can perform against a backdrop of boundary-pushing works of art, and festival attendees of all ages can be entertained and inspired by three days of exciting, eclectic artistic expression.

As Plugged In’s mission is about empowering kids to help others through music, we came up with the idea to give the kids attending the music workshops at Solid Sound a chance to make music for positive change, too!  Plugged In students (with help from Plugged In instructors) conducted (6) 45-minute workshops for kids attending the festival.  Kids attending the workshops were broken up into 4 groups: vocals, percussion, guitar and movement.  Each group was taught an original song written by Plugged In students and came together at the end of the workshop to perform the song…with performance support by the Plugged In students.  The performances were videotaped and are now available online for $5 as video on demand here at www.pluggedinband.tv.  The proceeds from the video on demand will be divided between Kidspace and Plugged In.  Kidspace at MASS MoCA, a contemporary art gallery, studio and educational program, promotes the understanding and teaching of art through experiential learning opportunities designed for elementary and middle school students, teachers, and families.

As there were van, gas and food costs incurred by Plugged In to make the trip to Solid Sound, we have created a GoFundMe page to raise funds to cover these expenses.  There were no expenses for accommodations as Plugged In students and teachers slept in an office building during the weekend!  Check out photos of day 1day 2 and day 3 of our adventure!

We had a GREAT time teaching music to the wonderful kids at the festival and look forward to the 2012 Solid Sound!  Thank you very much for your support!
